Do you like more? What is an dynamic IP address?
Dynamic IP addresses are most frequently assigned on LANs and broadband networks by Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers. They are used because it avoids the administrative burden of assigning specific static addresses to each device on a network. It also allows many devices to share limited address space on a network if only some of them will be online at a particular time. In most current desktop operating systems, dynamic IP configuration is enabled by default so that a user does not need to manually enter any settings to connect to a network with a DHCP server. DHCP is not the only technology used to assigning dynamic IP addresses. Dialup and some broadband networks use dynamic address features of the Point-to-Point Protocol.
How it's working. A dynamically allocated IP address is an address made available to all registered users upon request. When you are configured to use DHCP, your machine sends a request to the DHCP server for an IP address each time it is booted. If your machine is registered, the DCHP server responds by providing an IP address and other configuration addresses such as Gateway and DNS.
When registering for a dynamic IP address, the address you receive from the DHCP server is taken from a pool of IP addresses. Each time your computer requests an IP address from the DHCP server, it will be allocated an available address from the dynamic address pool. This address may be different each time your computer is started or if you release and renew your current IP address.
What is an dynamic IP address (for begginers)?
Requesting DHCP computers receive a dynamic IP address (think temporary phone number) for the duration of that Internet session or for some other specified amount of time. Once the user disconnects from the Internet, their dynamic IP address goes back into the IP address pool so it can be assigned to another user. Even if the user reconnects immediately, odds are they will not be assigned the same IP address from the pool. To keep our telephone telephone analogy going, using a dynamic IP address is similar to using a pay phone. Unless there is a reason to receive a call, the user does not care what number he or she is calling from. There are times, however, when users who connect to the Internet using dynamic IP wish to allow other computers to locate them.
Virtual IP address
Virtual IP address (VIP or VIPA) is an IP address that is not connected to a specific computer or network interface card (NIC) on a computer. Incoming packets are sent to the VIP address, but all packets travel through real network interfaces. VIPs are mostly used for connection redundancy; a VIP address may still be available if a computer or NIC fails because an alternative computer or NIC replies to connections.
Sticky dynamic IP address
A sticky dynamic IP address or sticky IP is a term created by cable and DSL users to describe a dynamically assigned IP address that does not change often. This is however an informal term, as a sticky IP does not differ in any way from other dynamic IP address. Even though IP addresses may not change often for cable or DSL users, the addresses are still controlled by the standard DHCP process. Since the modems are often online for extended periods of time, the leases on the IP addresses are commonly renewed, and therefore may not change.
Port number, ip address, computer name
Right click mycomputer/properties will give you most info about your computer or control panel, system icon .not sure what port # you are refering to.
Ip address .type winipconfg in start/run i think will work ,I haven't used win98 for a couple of yrs now .
winipcfg" is the correct spelling, but yes- that will give you all of your IP configuration info.
In terms of your question about the port #, you would have to clarify that by giving us more specific information. Network applications and/or services all use different ports, but that info isn't anything you usually have to configure or worry about.
What i am doing is writing a simple socket program using c++ to connect to another pc. The socket properties requires a port number and computer name to connect to that particular pc. Thus this what i am trying to find out is how to get the other pc's port number and computer name

How do I hide my IP address?
The most common method to hide your IP address is to use a proxy server in one form or another. A proxy server is a computer that offers a computer network service to allow clients to make indirect network connections to other network services. A client connects to the proxy server and then requests a connection, file, or other resource available on a different server. The proxy provides the resource either by connecting to the specified server or by serving it from a cache. In some cases, the proxy may alter the client's request or the server's response for various purposes.
There are several implementations of proxy servers that you can use to hide your IP address (in an attempt to remain anonymous on the internet):
Website Based Proxy Servers
A Website based proxy server is a website that provides a form for you to enter the URL of a website that you wish to anonymously visit. When you submit the form the website proxy server makes a request for the page that you want to visit. The machine usually does not identify itself as a proxy server and does not pass along your IP address in the request for the page. The features of these sites vary (ad blocking, javascript blocking, etc) as does their price. Some are free and some charge. Examples of website proxy services are:
Proxify.com
Browser Configured Proxy Servers
There are also stand alone proxy servers that allow for you to configure your browser to route your browser traffic through that machine, which then makes a request for a page on your behalf, and then sends you the results. These are usually used at no cost to the user. Since they are accessible to the public these are often quite slow. Please see instructions for using a proxy server.
There are a variety of types of these proxy servers:
Transparent Proxy
This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server and also makes the original IP address available through the http headers. These are generally used for their ability to cache websites and do not effectively provide any anonymity to those who use them. However, the use of a transparent proxy will get you around simple IP bans. They are transparent in the terms that your IP address is exposed, not transparent in the terms that you do not know that you are using it (your system is not specifically configured to use it.) This type of proxy server does not hide your IP address.
Anonymous Proxy
This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server, but does not make the original IP address available. This type of proxy server is detectable, but provides reasonable anonymity for most users. This type of proxy server will hide your IP address.
Distorting Proxy
This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server, but make an incorrect original IP address available through the http headers. This type of proxy server will hide your IP address.
High Anonymity Proxy
This type of proxy server does not identify itself as a proxy server and does not make available the original IP address. This type of proxy server will hide your IP address.
Installed Software Proxy Servers
There are a variety of companies and software packages available at either a onetime cost or at an annual subscription. These are usually faster and more reliable than the above proxy servers. Some of these services would include:
Hide My IP
Anonymizer.com's Anonymous Surfing
GhostSurf 2007 Platinum
TOR (Read about TOR)
VPN Services
A virtual private network (VPN) protects your data and identity over public networks, like the Internet and wireless hotspots. Various protocols are used to create an encrypted tunnel that transports data securely. While a firewall may protect the data on your computer, a VPN will protect your data on the Internet. The goal of a VPN is to implement the same level of security provided by private networks at substantially lower costs. VPN services provide different gateway cities where the IP address assigned to your computer is located. This allows users to access websites only available to users from a certain country. This application is particularly important for travelers who need to access websites from their home country and for people living in regions rife with censorship, like China and Iran.

Finding Your IP Address and a Website's IP Address
Nowadays, we live in the world of the internet and rarely does a single day pass by in which we don't log onto the net. However, have you ever thought of how we are able to connect to a person sitting nearly on the other side of the globe? In the case of the internet, the network on which all the systems reside is called WWW and it's too complicated for a non-technical person like us to comprehend it fully. So, I will just state briefly how different computers talk to each other on this world wide web or any other smaller network like you use at your work place or in your home.
Learn more
First off all, you should know that whenever a system connects to a network, it must identify itself uniquely on the network so that there is no conflict in identification. In order to do so, under Internet Protocol (IP), a unique address is provided to each system on a network. This Internet Protocol along with Transfer Control Protocol is generally referred as TCP/IP. There are different versions of IP like – Ipv4 or IPv6. The most commonly used one is IPv4. This protocol assigns a 4 byte IP Address to a system. Normally, an IP Address is nothing but a combination of 4 sets of integers in the range of 0 to 255 and joined together by the ".". For example 192.168.1.1 is a valid IP address. In case of IPv6, 16 bytes are used for this IP Address. So, whenever you connect to a network, your system will be assigned an IP Address like this. There are different ways you can connect to a network or to the Internet. You may connect to your ISP directly or you may do the same through a Router. In both ways, your system will be assigned an IP Address. Now there are two different types of IP Addresses – Static IP Address and Dynamic IP Address. In case of Static IP Address, your system is assigned a unique IP Address which does not change along with the time. Whenever your system gets a dynamic IP Address, however, your system's IP Address will change frequently. To get a unique IP Address each time you connect to a network or restart your router, normally you connect to a DHCP server and the server assigns you one IP Address from the pool of IP Addresses. In this case you don't know which IP Address your system is assigned when you log onto your system.
There are different ways to identify your system's IP Address. Likewise, you can also find out the IP Address of other systems on your network or Internet. This guide will show how to find out the IP Address of your own local system on a network and also the IP address of any website you visit.
To find out the IP address of a local system, there are different ways. We will discuss them one by one for a Windows XP system.
Method 1
First of all, open your "Start" menu and hit on "Run" or just hold on the "Windows" key on your keyboard and press "r". The following window will open up. Type "command" or "cmd" in the field provided. Click on "Ok".
Run dialog box
The following black window will open up.
command window
In this command window, type "ipconfig" and hit enter. And you will see the following output,
ipconfig
In the output, you can see the IP Address of my system is 172.16.21.98. Now, this is the IP Address my system is assigned on the LAN. But the IP Address provided by my ISP or Internet Service Provider is something different. We will also see how to find out that IP Address.
If you want detailed information of how your system is connecting to Internet or LAN, you should go for the following command, "ipconfig/all". See the next screenshot,
inconfig /all
You will see new information regarding your network here, but the most important among them all is the MAC Address under the column of "Physical Address". It is the unique address of your network adapter or card. Take a note of it.
Method 2
Now we will see a different way to find out system's IP Address.
On a Windows XP System, click on "Start" Menu and go for "Control Panel". The following window will open up, click on "Network and Internet Connections" under "Pick a category".
network and internet connections
The following window will open. Click on "Network Connections" under "pick a Control Icon". See below,
network connections
On the next window, you will see an icon named "Local Area Connection", double click on it and the following window will pop up,
local area connection
On the top, you will see a tab "Support", click on it. Under this tab there is a button "Details", click on it,
Support Details
On the next window, you will see a box with all the details of your network, it will be the same as the output of "ipconfig" command.
IP details
Now, you have seen the ways you can identify your system's IP Address assigned by your Router or ISP. You may also want to know the IP Address of other systems or you may want to know the IP Addresses of some websites. As we already discussed, each system or server on any network will be assigned a unique IP Address, the same goes for a website also. So, we will briefly discuss the best way to find out the IP Address of a website.
First open your command prompt, as stated earlier and type the following command in that black box, hit enter. Output is shown in the next screenshot,
Command – ping www.google.co.in
Ping
You can see in the first line of the output, "Pinging www.google.co.in [74.125.45.99]…". The IP address of this website is 74.125.45.99. So, before pinging the website, your system first resolves the website's name with DNS and gets the IP Address of the website. After it resolves the IP, it starts pinging the server with data packets.
Now you know how to find your computer's IP address along with how to find the IP address of a website.

What's My IP Address?
Home networking basics
Introduction
Experience the Internet anywhere in your house with a wireless home network. It's as simple as plugging a router into your home's Internet connection. Let us show you how.
Home Networking 101
Stream a movie from your computer to your HDTV. Print a photo from a laptop upstairs to a printer downstairs. Surf the web on your mobile phone using your home's Internet connection. These are just some of the things you can do with a home network.
A home network lets you connect Internet-ready devices, such as computers, mobile phones and gaming consoles, so you can conveniently share files, connect to printers and surf the web anywhere in your house. You can choose to set up a wired home network, in which case you connect using cables, or a wireless home network that works via radio signals.
Here's what a typical home network may look like:
To set up a home network, you need a router. You can lease one from us, or buy your own. A router is a networking device that lets your other devices share the same Internet connection through your cable modem. Since you'll be using your cable modem, you don't need a telephone modem.
When you connect your computer directly to your cable modem, you're assigned a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address. This is essentially your address on the Internet. Should you reconfigure your home network, or buy a new router, you'll need to release your IP address first. Otherwise, our servers won't recognize your new router or reconfiguration.
Follow the steps below to release your IP for your cable modem or digital voice modem (eMTA).
For cable modem users:
Shut down your computer.
Disconnect the power supply from your cable modem.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from your cable modem.
Connect the Ethernet cable for your router (link port) to the cable modem.
Connect the Ethernet cable for the port recommended by the router manufacturer to your computer.
Turn on the cable modem and allow it to cycle through and lock onto the network (approximately 90 seconds).
Turn on your router and allow it to cycle through (approximately 90 seconds) — at this point, the router has obtained a new IP address from us.
Turn on your computer. You'll notice the computer now has the private IP range provided by the router.
Configure your router in compliance with the manufacturer's guidelines.
For XFINITY Voice modem users:
Shut down your computer.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from your cable modem.
Connect the Ethernet cable for your router (link port) to the cable modem.
Connect the Ethernet cable for the port recommended by the router manufacturer to your computer.
Power cycle the XFINITY Voice modem by taking a ballpoint pen and lightly depressing the reset button on the back of your modem.
*Warning: Never remove the battery and then disconnect the modem from the power supply to power cycle. Allow it to cycle through and lock onto the network (approximately 90 seconds).
Turn on your router and allow it to cycle through (approximately 90 seconds). At this point, the router has obtained an IP address from us.
Turn on your computer. You'll notice the computer now has the private IP range provided by the router.
Configure the router in compliance with the manufacturer's guidelines.
If your computer doesn't obtain a private IP address from your router, find your operating system below and try the following steps:
Windows Vista
Click Start and then click All Programs.
Click Accessories.
Right-click on Command Prompt.
Select Run as Administrator.
Type ipconfig/release and then click Enter.
Windows XP/2000
Click the Start menu in the lower left-hand corner of the screen and click Run.
In the space provided, type ipconfig /release and click ok.
*Note: There is a space between ipconfig and /release.
Mac OS 10.x
Close any open Internet applications (web browsers, email, etc.).
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
Choose Network from the View menu.
Choose Active Network Ports from the Show menu.
Deselect the on check box for the port you use to connect to the Internet (built-in Ethernet, Airport, etc.).
Click Apply Now.

If you receive the same IP error, try the next solution.
Solution 5 (modem connection only): Set an alternate MAC address
Some Internet service providers allow devices to access the Internet, based on the MAC address of the device. If your computer can access the Internet by using your modem but your Xbox 360 console cannot, your console might need to use the same MAC address as your computer.
On your computer, click Start, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
Note If you're using Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type cmd , and then press ENTER.
At the command prompt, type ipconfig /all, and then press ENTER.
Find your network connection (for example, "Local Area Connection" or "Wireless Network Connection"), and look for a line that begins with "Physical Address."
Note the 12-digit physical address. This is your computer's MAC address.
Write down the 120digit physical address
Now, let's set this MAC address on your Xbox 360 console.
On your console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.
Select Network Settings.
Select WiredNetwork or the name of your wireless network, if you are prompted to do so.

Press the B button on your controller, and then test your connection.
If you receive the same IP error, try the next solution.
Solution 7: Turn on DHCP
Your router or gateway can automatically give your console an IP address by using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
Note If DHCP is not enabled on your router or gateway, the IP address for your Xbox 360 console will begin with 169 or appear as 0.0.0.0. You can see your console's IP settings, do the following:
On your console, press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings.
Select NetworkSettings.
Select WiredNetwork or the name of your wireless network, if you are prompted to do so.
Select ConfigureNetwork.
On the BasicSettings tab, select IPSettings.
If your network hardware does not have DHCP turned on, your console IP address will be either 0.0.0.0 or will begin with 169.
To turn on DHCP on your network hardware
Sign in to your router's web-based configuration page to check the DHCP setting. Refer to your router's documentation for help turning on DHCP.
If you change the DHCP setting, restart your Xbox 360 console and network hardware.
Test your Xbox LIVE connection. To do this, press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings. Select Network Settings, select Wired or your wireless network name (if you are prompted to do so), and then select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.
If turning on DHCP does not resolve the problem, please try the next solution.
Additional troubleshooting steps
If the previous solutions did not fix the problem, try the following:
Solution 8 (wireless only): Check for MAC filtering
Wireless routers and gateways can prevent unauthorized access by using a feature that is known as MAC filtering. If MAC filtering is turned on for your router or your gateway, your Xbox 360 console won't be able to connect to Xbox LIVE. To connect, you'll have to obtain the MAC address of your console and add it your router/gateway settings.
To obtain the MAC address of your console
On your console, press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings.
Select Network Settings.
Select the name of your wireless network, if you are prompted to do so.
Select Configure Network.
On the Additional Settings tab, select Advanced Settings.
Write down the MAC address that is shown on the screen (for example: 0017FAD7CD80).
Write down the MAC address
Now, check your router or gateway to see whether MAC filtering is turned on. If MAC filtering is turned on, add your console's MAC address to the router or gateway setup page. Check your hardware documentation to determine how to do this.
If this did not resolve the problem, try the next solution.
Solution 9 (wireless only): Try a wired connection
Connect your Xbox 360 console to your router or to your gateway by using a network cable. Here's how to do this:
Plug one end of a network cable into the back of your console and the other end into a port on your router or on your gateway.
To test your Xbox LIVE Connection on the console, press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings. Select Network Settings, and then select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.
If this did not resolve the problem, try the next solution.
Solution 10: Try a direct connection with the modem
Try connecting your Xbox 360 console to your modem instead of connecting it to a router or to a gateway. Here's how to do this:
Plug one end of a network cable into the back of your console and the other end into your modem.
If your ISP gave you a PPPoE user name and a password, you will need to enter this information on your console. For information about how to do this, please see solution 6 above.
Make sure that your IP settings are set to automatic. To learn how to reset your IP settings to automatic, see solution 1.
To test your Xbox LIVE Connection, press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings. Select Network Settings, and then select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.
This step helps determine the cause of the problem, but is not meant to be a permanent solution.
Try a different cable
In rare cases, the cable can be the source of the problem. Use a different network cable to connect your Xbox 360 console to your network hardware. If you don't have another network cable, temporarily use the network cable that your computer is using.
If you can connect to Xbox LIVE when you use a wired connection, there is a problem with the configuration of your router or your gateway. Contact the manufacturer of your router or of your gateway for help.

How to Find your Computer IP Address in Windows 7
(Contributed: Video and article by Mitz from Tips4pc. You can subscribe to her videos on Youtube at the Computerbasics channel.)
Windows 7, the latest addition to the Microsoft operating system family, shows some significant differences to its earlier counterparts. I immediately noticed that the Network and Sharing Center in Windows Seven, although it still existed, contained both new and changed links. These changes were minor changes, but did warrant some extra exploring.

One of the first things I searched for was my computer IP address and the main details of my internet connection. It clearly has no View status link in the Network and Sharing Center as in the previous version in Windows Vista. Instead the view status link has become a link to the actual connection that your computer has.

For example if you have a Local area connection, that will be the link to press on.
Quick steps to see your computer IP address on Windows Seven:
Click on the Network icon in the notification area.
A box will appear, choose the Network and Sharing Center.
In the Network and Sharing Center click on your connection. For example: Local Area Connection.
Then click on the Details button.
Your connection details will be there, including your computer Ip address.
